An evening of music exploring the connection between music, meditation, Buddhist philosophy, ancient tuning systems and the influence of good tea on music making. The three composers/performers share a deep interest in the writings of 13th century Japanese “mystical realist” Dogen Zenji. An exploration of the futility of expressing and exploring silence and stillness through music.

GUÐMUNDUR STEINN GUNNARSSON
In his search for a pathway for musical expressions that know neither grids nor straight lines, Guðmundur Steinn Gunnarsson has had to incorporate digital dynamic screen scores or animated notation (or related digital methods) to express his inability to adapt to the convenient society. This often calls for working frequently with the same musicians, f.ex Fengjastrútur and its offshoot his own quartet Fersteinn. Once the methods started to take shape they would travel into various other types of ensembles and practices. Apart from experimental notation Guðmundur has experimented with tuning/temperament and experimental or adjusted instruments and vocal performance. His interest in Icelandic folk song has fuelled his belief in life without barlines or equal distances and no-grid approach to music. In all his experiments the computer acts as an unlikely ally between the seemingly irrational and its realization.

KRISTOFER SVENSSON
Kristofer Svensson is a kacapi musician, music theorist, and composer from Sweden. Svensson's compositions have been performed by soloists and groups such as Contemporaneous (US), Quatuor Bozzini (CA), Mats Persson & Kristine Scholz (SE), the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble (HK), and Maya Bennardo (US/SE). Svensson’s solo composition for kacapi, 'Andra Segel', was released in 2020 on the kuyin label, and a trio album, 'two skies', with Maya Bennardo and Erik Blennow Calälv was released in 2022 on the thanatosis label. A new recording with this aforementioned trio is forthcoming on Another Timbre in 2026. Svensson studied the kacapi with Ade Suparman and Dody Satya Ekagustiman in Bandung, West Java. DARYL JAMIESON
Daryl Jamieson was born in 1980 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. He is currently based in Zushi, Japan, and works as a researcher at Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto. Jamieson’s work focuses on perception and memory. Preoccupations with musical time and the psychogeography of historic locations are heavily influenced by his study and practice of nō theatre and koto, as well as his study of Japanese poetry and art. One of his largest works to date, a trilogy of musical theatre pieces called the Vanitas Series, received the 2018 Toshi Ichiyanagi Contemporary Prize. He has written music criticism for TEMPO (UK) and Nutida Musik (Sweden), and was the English translator of Jo Kondo’s book homo audiens (MusikTexte, 2022).
