I suspected that being a photographer working with film would be a challenge here in Oaxaca and I now realize that´s an understatement. Coming down here I brought with me 30 rolls of black and white film which I finished almost three weeks ago. Since not decent film is available here I promptly ordered another batch over the internet that still hasn´t managed to find its way here via the notoriously slow Mexican postal service. Finding processing chemicals for the exposed rolls was also a search worthy of another post but I finally managed to get hold of what I needed – developer, stop, fix and Photoflo – and process some 25 rolls. Developing film here consists of me crawling into the only dark space in this house; a tiny storage closet from the living room where I load the processing tank. Then I develop the film in the kitchen sink, wash it under a facet in the garden (that is, coincidentally, a consistent 22 degrees Celsius, a rather perfect temperature for washing film) and then hanging them to dry in the living room window, hoping that they´ll dry before the cat gets them.
