Spennandi tónleikar í Mengi sunnudagskvöldið 17. desember þar sem fram koma tónlistarmennirnir og hljóðærasmiðirnir Halldór Eldjárn, ROSYAN og hópurinn Owl Project. Tónleikar hefjast klukkan 21. Húsið verður opnað klukkan 20:30.

Að baki Owl Project standa þeir Simon Blackmore, Anthony Hall og Steve Symons. Í verkum sínum blanda þeir saman skúlptúrum og hljóðlist, skúlptúrarnir eru hljóðfæri og hljóðgjafar, gerðir úr tré og rafhljóðfærum. Á meðal áhrifavalda sem þeir sækja í má nefna hljóðgervlamenningu áttunda áratugarins og raftónlist samtímans - útkoman verður svolítið sérviskuleg en á sama tíma heillandi hugleiðing um tæknina á okkar tímum. 

Sífelldur þorsti mannsins í ný og ný tæki og tól sem úreldast á örskotsstundu og samband hans við tækni er þeim félögum hugleikið. Þeir hafa sýnt innsetningar sínar og skúlptúra víða og komið fram í Belfast, Lausanne, Manchester, Bergen, Torino og Sheffield, svo fátt eitt sé nefnt.

Að baki ROSYAN stendur dansk-íranska tónskáldið Rosanna Lorenzen sem er búsett í Reykjavík þar sem hún leggur stund á nám í tónsmíðum. Í verkum sínum kannar hún samruna og stefnumót raftónlistar við selló og aðra órafmagnaða hljóðgjafa. Vettvangshljóðritanir og sellólykkjur fléttast saman við rafrænan hljóðheim hennar; stundum fljótandi og sveimkenndan, stundum taktvissan og ágengan. Sjálf kallar hún tónlistina sína sveimkennda danstónlist (Ambient Dance Music eða ADM) sem er hugtak komið úr ranni hennar sjálfrar.

Trommuleikarinn, tónskáldið og hljóðfærasmiðurinn Halldór Eldjárn hefur á undanförnum árum vakið athygli fyrir ýmis konar heimasmíðuð sjálfvirk hljóðfæri eða tónlistarvélmenni en hann hefur komið fram víða, svo sem á Iceland Airwaves og Tónlistarhátíðinni Sónar Reykjavík 2017. Hann frumflutti fyrr á þessu ári í Mengi tónlistarinnsetninguna Poco Apollo þar sem sjálfspilandi harpa flytur eigin tónsmíðar við mörg þúsund ljósmyndir sem teknar voru af geimförum Apollo-verkefnisins á árunum 1969 til 1972 - Halldór bjó til eigið tónlistforrit sem semur nýja tónsmíð við hverja einustu ljósmynd. Á tónleikunum í Mengi verður flutt verkefni Poco Apollo Live Session þar sem fram koma auk sjálfspilandi hörpunnar þau Halldór Eldjárn, Daníel Helgason á gítar og Þórdís Gerður Jónsdóttir á selló. 

Tónleikarnir eru hluti af verkefninu Handmade Sounds sem ýtt var úr vör af Curated Place í Bretlandi og Einkofi Productions á Íslandi en verkefnið hlaut styrk frá Norrænu ráðherranefndinni. Verkefnið hófst í Hull fyrr á þessu ári en Hull hefur verið Menningarborg Bretlandseyja árið 2017 og þar fór fram tónlistarhátíðin North Atlantic Flux sem laut listrænni stjórnun tónlistarmannsins John Grant. Næstu tónleikar voru haldnir í DIEM (Dönsku raftónlistarmiðstöðinni) í Aarhus sem hefur verið ein af Menningarhöfuðborgum Evrópu á árinu.

About the project:

To celebrate the completion of the Nordic Council of Minister supported project 'Handmade Sounds 'we are bringing together some of the incredible artists we have been working with over the last year for an evening of sonic experimentation with Mengi. 

Initiated in Reykjavik as part of John Grant’s North Atlantic Flux for Hull2017 - the UK's Capital of Culture, our artists went on to develop and share a series of handmade instruments and performances at DIEM in Aarhus as part of the European Capital of Culture Programme. Finally we now come together in Reykjavik, home to the roots of the project, to experience the work of the participating artists.

About the artists:

Owl Project is a collaborative group of artists consisting of Simon Blackmore, Antony Hall and Steve Symons. They work with wood and electronics to fuse sculpture and sound art, creating music making machines, interfaces and objects which intermix pre-steam and digital technologies.

Drawing on influences such as 70’s synthesiser culture, DIY woodworking and current digital crafts, the resulting artwork is a quirky and intriguing critique of the allure and production of technology. Owl Project make a distinctive range of musical and sculptural instruments that question human interaction with computer interfaces and our increasing appetite for new and often disposable technologies.

ROSYAN is the synonym for the solo project of the Danish/Iranian composer andsound artist Rosanna Lorenzen, based in Reykjavík at the moment on exchange at Listaháskóli Íslands.She explores the meeting between the acoustic and electronic world, and moves between ambient sound collages to versatile, more rhythmic structures, combining the cello and other acoustic instruments with electronic elements. Field recordings and live looping of the cello includes what you can meet in her organic soundscapes, which she categorises as ADM (Ambient Dance Music) - a self-invented genre name.

Halldór Eldjárn is an Icelandic drummer/musician/programmer. His live show consists of live performing robotic instruments which he has built. Soundscape-y electronic tones, yet rhythmic. Guaranteed to blow minds and soothe ears! Halldór performed at festivals Iceland Airwaves 2016 and Sónar Reykjavík 2017, to critical acclaim and did a live performance for Seattle based radio station KEXP. 

Poco Apollo, a sound installation he created was premiered in Mengi in Reykjavík, January 2017. It consists of a self-playing harp and a self-composing music software he built and is accessible online athttp://bit.ly/PocoApollo . The software interprets pictures from the Apollo space program and composes soundtracks to accompany them, based on their calculated "mood". 

In Mengi in December 2017, Halldór will perform Poco Apollo Live with guitarist Daniel Helgason and Thordis Gerdur Jonsdottir on cello.
