Artist Sara Riel has practiced a kind of drawing where she trains herself in reaching a state of flow, exploring the world within her – seeing where the line takes her. Longing to create art from the subconscious mind led Sara Riel to collaborate on graphic scores. She lets the music mould the drawings that come alive without censorship of the mind. 

During this live performance she closes her eyes and lets the pen lead her onwards while listening to the voice of singer and songwriter Ólöf Arnalds. Arnalds creates a listening experience by unfolding unforeseen harmonies and unexpected melodic sequences. 

The two artists have a deep understanding of each others practice. They have known each other since early childhood and collaborated on many occasions, amongst others Sara Riel created the record cover and the visuals for Ólöf Arnalds’s much acclaimed first solo record ‘Við & Við’.

Interest in graphic notation, a method that experimental composers like Kagel, Stockhausen, Ligeti, Wolff, or Cage developed, is another inspiration for the drawing collaboration. In Sara Riel's drawings graphic notation is derived from listening to music instead of the notation being the foundation, the process is somewhat reversed.

Sara Riel’s exhibition ‘Automatic’ is on view at Kling&Bang at Marshallhouse from 20.10 - 25.11 2018 from 12:00 - 18:00 and will be open on Thursday until 21:00.
