Frá því að Chris Speed kom til New York snemma á 10. áratug síðustu aldar hefur hann verið einn af mikilvægustu spunatónlistarmönnum borgarinnar. Hann hefur tekist á við margskonar verkefni, allt frá djasstónlist yfir í þjóðlaga-, klassíska- og rokk tónlist. Stofnun tríósins með trommaranum Dave King (The Bad Plus) og bassaleikaranum Chris Tordini hefur að einhverju leiti snúið stefnu verka Chris við. Hópurinn er að koma aftur úr fyrri verkefnum sem eiga sér djúpar rætur í djasshefðum og innleiða allt það sem þeir hafa lært inn í verk sín. Það sem er einna mest heillandi við þessa tónlist er innleiðing eldri djass-hefða á beinskeittan og áhrifaríkan hátt. Tónlistin er upplífgandi og Chris er laginn við að semja lög sem búa yfir eigin tilfinningaheimum og möguleikum sem finna má innan grípandi laglína þeirra.
Tímaritið Chicago Reader tilnefndi fyrstu plötu tríósins Really OK sem eina af bestu djass plötum ársins og nefndi sérstaklega hæfileika hljómsveitarinnar til þess að tengja saman ást sína og virðingu fyrir djass tónlist til þess að ýta tónlistarforminu inn á nýjar slóðir.

Since arriving in New York in the early 1990s, reed player Chris Speed has been one of the most vital improvising musicians on the scene. His work has always ranged widely, moving from a jazz base out through various forms of folk, classical and rock music. With the formation of this excellent trio with drummer Dave King (The Bad Plus) and bassist Chris Tordini he has sort of reversed the direction. This is a group returning from other explorations to work deep within the jazz tradition, bringing everything else they've learned back in. What is most compelling about this music is the incorporation of early jazz styles in a way that is direct and deeply felt. The music is joyful and generous and Speed has an uncanny knack for coming up with tunes that can create a whole world of emotions and formal possibilities behind an often catchy melodic surface.
The Chicago Reader tagged their debut album "Really Ok" as "one of the best jazz records of the year" and noted the trio "seamlessly connecting their abiding love and respect for jazz tradition with an inherent interest in pushing the music forward."
